Car servicing: How to change your wheel

Car service guide: How to change your cars wheel (video)

Changing a car wheel is a fundamental skill that every driver should possess. Whether you've encountered a flat tire on a remote road and need to carry out emergency repair work or simply want to be prepared for unexpected situations, knowing how to change a car wheel is a valuable skill.

In this step-by-step guide, we'll walk you through the process of changing a car wheel, so that you are prepared should the worst happen.

Find a safe location

If possible find a Safe Location Before you begin, ensure your car is parked on a flat surface away from traffic. Engage the handbrake and turn on your hazard lights for added safety. If possible, use wheel chocks to secure the wheels opposite the one you're changing.

If this isn't possible you MUST make sure you are as visible as possible and call for aid should you feel endangered.

Gather your tools

Locate your car's jack, lug wrench, and spare tire. These tools are usually found in the trunk or beneath the cargo floor. Familiarize yourself with their use to streamline the process.

Loosen lug nuts

Loosen Lug Nuts Using the lug wrench, loosen the lug nuts on the wheel with the flat tire without fully removing them.  At this point you simply need to crack them off with a simple half turn, this may require some strength.

The reason we do this now is that it is easier when the car is still on the ground due to increased stability.

Set up your jack

Position the jack under the car frame near the flat tire. Refer to your car's manual for the correct jacking points. Lift the car using the jack until the flat tire is off the ground.

Remove the Flat Tire

Fully unscrew and remove the lug nuts and set them aside in an easy to reach location.  Carefully remove the wheel and put it aside.

Mount the Spare Tire

Lift the spare wheel onto the wheel bolts. Align the holes in the spare tire with the bolts and place the wheel onto the hub.

Secure the Lug Nuts

hand-tighten the lug nuts onto the wheel bolts. Use the lug wrench to tighten them further, following a crisscross pattern for even pressure.

Lower the Car

Carefully lower the car with the jack until it rests on the ground and remove the jack.

Tighten Lug Nuts

Give each lug nut a final tightening using the lug wrench, ensuring they are secure and unable to come loose. If you are concerned about proper torque settings you can drive to your local independent car service centre who will be able to help.

Double-Check and Stow

Double-check that all lug nuts are tightened properly. Stow the defective wheel, jack, and tools back in their designated spots.

Congratulations! You've successfully changed your car wheel. Knowing how to perform this basic task not only ensures your safety on the road but also empowers you to handle unexpected situations with confidence. Regularly check your spare tire's condition and keep your tools in good order so that you're always prepared for whatever the road may throw at you. Happy driving!
